Medicine Floor, St. Vincent's Hospital

Miriam Minkowitz

folded like an umbrella your body
springs open
as your nurse approaches your bed
you stab her in the eye
she wraps your fingers in a blanket
to protect her face
while she does the caring

she feeds you through a tube
in your belly
she turns you over on your side
and changes the sheets
you clutch her sleeve
she peels you off and says
you have a visitor

it's your daughter with flowers
and a briefcase
your daughter who kisses your cheek
and says mama mama
mama can't you hear me
you purse your lips and make
sucking sounds
